Research-based competition concludes at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU)
ISLAMABAD: A research-based posters/models competition held at the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) amongst the students of BS/MSc/MPhil and PhD chemistry students concluded on Friday.
“AIOU has made great progress towards promotion of science education and earned prestigious name at international level during the last three years,” Riphah International University Islamabad Rector Prof Dr GA Miana said at the prize distribution ceremony of the competition.
Prof GA Miana and two others – Federal Public Service Commission former member and Quaid-e-Azam University former professor Dr Mashooda Hassan and Quaid-e-Azam University former professor Dr Shagufta Zulfiqar judged the competition.
According to results announced by the judges, in the category of BS and MSc for poster competition, Nadeem Afsar clinched first position, Ghulam Qasim got 2nd while Syeda Bushra Rahat, Zartasha Naseem and Sidra Nawaz secured third position. In the category of MPhil and PhD for poster competition, Nadia Riaz and Sadia Iram grabbed the first; Shahid Farooqi got 2nd while Shaista Sabir collected third position.
In models competition, Sadia Abbas secured first position, Zil-e-Huma, Anum Ali and Saima Naz got 2nd and Syeda Atiqa Gilani secured third position.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr G A Miana said setting up a ‘Science Club’ to involve and encourage youth for promotion of science and technology in the country is one of the most-productive initiative taken by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangiof the university.
AIOU’s Department of Chemistry Chairperson Prof Dr Naghmana Rashid and several others, including Dr Uzma Yunus, Dr Muazzam H Bhatti, Dr Muhammad Sher, Dr Nasima Arshad and Dr Muhammad Zaman Ashraf, were the research supervisors of the posters and models.
Prof Dr Naghmana Rashid said all the research-based posters and models placed in the competition were prepared in the labs of the Department of Chemistry and the students did excellent work in promoting science and research-based education. She said the Department of Chemistry was established in March 1998 and offers courses for FSc, BS, MSc, MPhil and PhD chemistry. She said during the year 2012-13, a total of two PhD, 21 MPhil and 33 BS/MSc students had completed their degrees. She said besides well-equipped research labs, the faculty and students have access to Internet and international journals, latest books in offices, library and book bank. The department has been provided all the facilities and state-of-the-art equipments since last three years, she added.
Meanwhile, she said that each year the department publishes more than thirty research articles in reputed international journals. The Chemistry Department of AIOU, she said has very effective local as well as international linkages with relevant departments of different universities and organisations.
