Charlie’s Aunt at Government College of Home Economics (GCHE) Lahore
LAHORE – The Government College of Home Economics (GCHE) presented its annual play ‘Khalid Ki Khala’ which is an Urdu translation of Brandon Thomas’s play ‘Charlie’s Aunt’.
On the first day, famous poet Amjad Islam Amjad graced the occasion as chief guest while on the second day, Arifa Khalid was the chief guest. The students belonging to various classes actively participated in the play. The play was based on a society which strictly follows the traditional values.
Amjad Islam Amjad admired the set, costumes and acting. “Such activities are very important for a wholesome personality, they need to be promoted,” he remarked.
Arifa Khalid appreciated the play and said the girls can express their hidden talent through drama. In the end, Arifa Khalid distributed certificates among the participants of the play.
College Principal Dr Samia Kalsoom stressed the importance of co-curricular activities, especially drama, in learning process. Meanwhile, she received the best principal award from Punjab CM. The Ravi’s 99th edition published: The 99th edition of “the Ravi” has emerged on Saturday with literary and research articles by noted writers, journalists, professors, old ravians and the university students.
The oldest academic literary magazine of the subcontinent and a contemporary of London Times Literary Supplement “The Ravi” has been a part of the subcontinent’s literary heritage for the last 110 years.
This year the English section of The Ravi boasts such prominent names as Dr S M Ali Abbass, Khalid Ahmed, Dr Faisal Bari, Mushahid Hussian, Dr Pervez Hoodhbhoy, Dr Saadat Saeed, S M Zafar, Brig (r) Vinod C Khanna and many other noted and profound personalities.
The writers on a spectrum ranging from prominent old ravians such as Najam Sethi, political thinker Lal Khan, political analyst Dr Moeed Pirzada were featured in the compilation. Despite the gravity of their subject matter, articles by Ali Moeen Nawazish and Sheherbano Taseer offered a light hearted yet thought provoking view of pertinent issues.
The Urdu section of The Ravi consisted of more than five sections, paying tribute to the literary greats such as, Saadat Hassan Manto, Zia Jalandhari, Shahzad Ahmad, Hafeez Hoshiarpuri and a Punjabi section hailing the works of Abbas Najmi. These sections were devoted to acknowledge the works and lives of the eminent personalities associated with the Urdu literary tradition.
The contributors include notable literati like Intezar Hussain, Sarmad Sehbai, Amjad Isam Amjad, Adnan Mohsin, Shuja ur Rahman Dogar, Khursheed Rizvi and Dr Syed Tariq Zaidi.
The Editor of this year’s The Ravi Urdu Section Ali Akhtar Saleem explored the complexities of the human mind in its editorial, longing for intellectual independence in the socio-political contexts. GCU VC Dr Khaleeq-ur-Rahman, said that the main objective of The Ravi is to explore the literary talent among the university students, adding that it provides them a medium of self-expression. “It is a necessary aid to the fostering of literary environment in the university”, he added. He said that the literary magazine had been named after the river Ravi, adding that the flowing river is referred as the symbolic continuity of ideas, thoughts, feelings and rich sentiments of the GCU students, alumni and faculty members which are expressed through the magazine. The VC said people like Nobel Laureate Prof Dr Abdus Salam, A S Bukhari and N M Rashid are among its former editors.
CRACKDOWN: On the direction of District Coordination Officer Lahore Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, special teams carried out crackdown against Sheesha Cafes. Inspection teams sealed 5 Sheesha Cafes namely D-Latty, Dream Lounge, Revolution, Hawana and Royal Lounge at M M Alam Road and captured Huqqas. Moreover, Noor-ul-Amin Mengal said that crackdown against Sheesha smoking cafes would be continued and they would not be allowed to darken the future of young generation.
