17 dept heads resign against Government Muhammadan Anglo Oriental MAO college Lahore principal’s ‘misbehaviour’
LAHORE: Almost all heads of departments of the Government MAO College on Wednesday resigned en masse from headship of their respective departments in protest against the principal’s alleged insulting attitude.
On the other hand, the college principal Prof Dr Farhan Ebadat Yar Khan also “attempted” to resign from the post which was “foiled” by the Secretary Higher Education Department, Punjab, the controlling authority of public colleges across the province.
It is learnt that the heads of various departments held an emergent meeting on Wednesday, strongly condemned alleged insulting attitude of the principal and unanimously decided to resign from the headship of their respective departments. The teachers submitted a copy of en masse resignation in office of the principal as well as the Higher Education Department.
It is pertinent to mention that The News on Tuesday had published a story highlighting growing anxiety among the faculty members because of the principal’s alleged misbehavior. However Dr Farhan Ebadat had categorically denied the charge.
Out of 21 heads of departments, as many as 17 resigned in the Wednesday meeting. It was also decided in the meeting that if the government did not take any action against the principal all the staff of the college would also tender resignations. After the 17 heads, the sources said, the rest of the heads were also ready to resign. Some of them were not present in the meeting on Wednesday.
Those who resigned from headship of departments included: Azam Hasan (Botany Department); M Akbar (Chemistry); Ashfaq Ahmad Waraich (Head of I.Com/ BCom/BBA (Hons) programmes); Muhammad Afzal (Persian); Kehkashan Ali (Social Work); Khalid Mahmood (English); Nazir Ahmed Khalid (Geography); Saeed ul Haq (History); Farzand Ali (Mathematics); Qamar Waheed Khan (Physical Education); Akbar Ali Shah (Physics); Mehmood Farid (Political Science); Zafar Jamal (Psychology); Hamayun Hassan (Statistics/I.T); Muhammad Arif (In-charge 2nd Shift/Zoology and Mass Communication); Muhammad Mushtaq (Punjabi); and Dr Mahmood Ahmed (Arabic).
According to sources in the Govt MAO College, the principal left the college before the faculty members’ meeting ended. Afterwards, the teachers submitted en bloc resignations to the vice-principal.
Knowing the development taking place at the college, Dr Farhan got his own resignation typed from the post of principal and contacted Higher Education secretary Dr Ijaz Munir to inform him that he wanted to resign from the post. However, he was told to wait. He ‘complied with’ the order and changed his mind, the sources said.
The News could not reach Prof Dr Farhan Ebadat Yar Khan for comments despite repeated attempts on his cell phone. However, when contacted, Higher Education secretary Dr Ijaz Munir said he had come to know that the heads of various departments had resigned from their posts but had not seen en masse resignation. He said the principal, Dr Farhan, also wanted to resign but he had stopped him from doing so. “The department has no issue with the principal”, Dr Ijaz Munir said, adding that he himself would listen to both sides before taking any action in this regard
