The Institute of Physical Therapy aims for the highest possible standard of Physiotherapy education. The institute is aiming to establish a good reputation in excellence, both in Pakistan and internationally.

The course has been designed to improve the standard of Physiotherapy in Pakistan. This course will reflect the international standard.

The objectives of the program are:

·        To produce Physical Therapist who can provide rehabilitation services as a member of health care team.

·        To improve the standard of Physiotherapy in Pakistan

·        The students will be trained not only as members of health care team but also as practitioners of “first contact” who can prevent & cure to minimize the disability in any incidence of injury.

A major section of the early years of the program is the study of normal movement and the basic medical sciences. The remainder of the program deals with abnormal movement and the nature and application of physical modalities used in prevention and treatment of disease and disability. The students will be trained not only as members of the health care team concerned with the physical and psychosocial rehabilitation of sick and disabled people but also as a practitioner of first contact concerned with prevention of disability in the workplace, in the community and in recreational pursuits.

The course shall comprise of 4 academic years (full time) and one-year clinical internship, which is subject to availability of the clinical placements and the academic merits of the students. The entry requirement for this course is intermediate pre-medical or equivalent with 50% marks.

Subjects of Basic Sciences and Clinical Sciences:

The first year students shall study Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Physics, Kinesiology and English.

Students will commence their clinical practice in second year & continue in third & fourth year. These clinical placements will be conducted in different teaching hospitals of Baqai Medical University.

The third year introduces discipline specific subjects of Cardiothoracic, Musculoskeletal and Neurological Physiotherapy. In addition, the Pathological Conditions are also added with the knowledge of Medicine, General and Orthopaedic Surgery. A summer clinical placement may be carried out between third and fourth years of the course. This clinical placement will be conducted in one of the rural setups of Baqai foundation. The basic aim of the placement is to serve the rural population by increasing awareness and adapting preventive methods in order that they can minimize the potential of injuries. Moreover, the patients who require Physiotherapy intervention can also be benefited by this placement.

Problem Based Learning will be the method of instruction. Students will be given actual scenario of the cases and they will try to prioritize these problems and contributing factors.

This course will comprise of theoretical and supervised clinical practice in Physiotherapy. Brief outlines of the course are as follows:

·        Course name: Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Medicine

·        Duration of the Course: Four academic years (annual system) and one-year clinical practice. This internship will be offered to the selected number of students depending upon their academic merits.

Our first batch of 20 Students successfully passed out in last Final Examination held in February, 2009, & were awarded the degree of B.S.P.T (Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy).

Hand Book for Students

1.     Institute of Physical Therapy is situated in the precincts of Fatima Hospital in Baqai Medical University.

2.     It is an autonomous component of Baqai Medical University

3.     The Institute, besides academic activities also provides physiotherapy & rehabilitation facility for Indoor and Outdoor Patients.

4.     All required facilities like class rooms, reading room, common room, staff rooms and Gymnasium are available.

5.     Treatment cubicles with required modalities are present in the clinical section of the institute.

6.     The B.S. Physical Therapy is a 4 year degree programme

7.     Its course of studies has been approved by Academic Council of Baqai Medical University and is at par with other recognized physical therapy colleges in the country.

8.     The college timings are from 8:30am to 4:00pm with a one hour break for lunch. Sundays are closed.

9.     A well equipped central library for all the students of Baqai Medical University is available.

10. The University provides transport facilities for the students and staff on payment basis.

11. The Faculty of the Institute is composed of dedicated, qualified and experienced members. Modern teaching aids like multimedia and projectors are available.

12. Student’s Common room, tuck shop and Cafeteria is available at the University.

13. Sports facilities including play grounds are available and sporting activities are organized on regular basis.

14.  Extra curricular and social activities are also held throughout the year.

15. “Journal of Baqai Medical University” is published twice a year.
