French Week Commences at LUMS - Lahore University of Management Sciences LUMS Lahore
French Week at LUMS has been magnifique! The programme began on April 2, 2012 with an exhibition of Ejaz Malik, featuring sculptures, paintings, and unique furniture. Dr. Adil Najam, the Vice Chancellor LUMS; LUMS faculty; staff and students were in attendance at the exhibition and the “Flavours of France” buffet that followed. Chocolate éclairs, quiches, tarts, and more were provided by Kitchen Cuisine, a bakery in Lahore.
On the second day, Florent Arjol Condé, Visiting Faculty in the LUMS Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), discussed French poetry to an auditorium full of students. Crêpes, very thin pancakes typically found in France, followed.
The third day, LUMS had the honour of hosting His Excellency (HE) Philippe Thiebaud, French Ambassador to Pakistan 2011-present, as well as Sharyar M. Khan, Pakistani Ambassador to France 1999-2001, and Musa Javed Chohan, Pakistani Ambassador to France 2001-2003. The three discussed relations between France and Pakistan, and how they have evolved from 2000-2012. The general sentiment was that though the relationship has, like any relationship, had ups and downs, France has always been a friend to Pakistan. Thiebaud cited a recent festival of Pakistani music in Paris that was well received. He expressed a desire to continue to promote Pakistani culture, in part to counter the negative images generally shown in the media, and continue to build trade between France and Pakistan.
The film Intouchables and the documentary Paris were also shown during the week. The celebration of French culture will continue with musical performances, documentaries, a rugby match, and a conference with Nadhra Shahbaz regarding the tomb of Marie-Charlotte, daughter of General Allard, who died in Lahore in 1827. Be sure to check out the programme here and attend all the events you can.
