Sports at King Edward Medical University (formerly King Edward Medical College) Lahore
King Edward Medical College, Lahore has a 148 years old long traditions of achievements not simply in the field of academics but in sports as well.
History of sports in K.E.M.C. is as old as the college itself. Kemcolian boys and girls have not only excelled in academics and literature but also made outstanding achievements in sports. Quaid-e-Millat Liaqat Ali in 1948 and Fatima Jinnah in 1951 attended the annual sports function of K.E.M.C.
ATHLETICS:
Late Majid Niazi was the finest sprinter of Pakistan. Dr. A. Aslam won the Punjab University Athletics Blue and was the best athlete of K.E.M.C. in 1957. Dr. Haroon Rashid, a very fine athlete, was sports Secretary of the College and a member of Punjab University Athletics team in 1978-79. During late 70’s Dr. Maqsood Minhas made his mark as the best thrower of Pakistan Universities. He holds college records in Hammer throw and Shot-put. He also won Bronze Medal in National Games in 1978. DR. Khalid Jamil was a fine athlete and holds record in 110m hurdles and was am member of the Pakistan junior Athletics Team. Dr Ali Sher Bajwa and Wasim Ismail Aziz also got gold medals in Punjab University athletics
Rifle Shooting
The most outstanding club of the K.E. Medical College has been the Rifle Shooting Club which has won the inter-collegiate competition for 11 consecutive times till 1991, Dr. Azeem ud Din Zahid Captained. Dr. Tariq Mahmood Malik was awarded Punjab University Blue in Rifle Shooting in 1981-82. He remained the best marksman of the Punjab University for three consecutive years. He got Silver Medal in National Rifle Shooting in Air Pistol Event. Dr. Rizwan Naseer, the best marksman in 1991, also captained the Pakistan University Team in the National games. In 2000, College Rifle Shooting Team headed by Omer Mumtaz got 3rd Position in Punjab University. Umer Najeeb got Bronz medal in the event of prone, Kneeling and standing. Umer Najeeb, got bronze medal in kneeling position. Shahid Sharif, Umar Mumtaz, Asad Akbar Khan, Faraauq Barki Sanrang Khan also got position in the Punjab University. In session 2006-07 and 2007-08 we got 3rd positions in All Pakistan Intervarsity Rifle Shooting competition held at Faisalabad. In session 2006-07 University Rifle Shooting team headed by Fahad Wali Shah Khagga. Other members are Safwan Jamil Sherryar Niazi. Shehryar Niazi got 2nd position in pistol firing. Session 2007-08 teams members are Fahad Wali Shah Khagga, Safwan Jamil, Haseeb Shahbaz Amin and Shehryar Niazi. Shehryar Niazi got 2nd position in pistol firing. We are on the victory stand of the Punjab University since 1980.
Hockey
Among the College students, the name of Brig. Hameedi stands out who captained Pakistan Hockey Team in 1948 Olympics. Dr. Farooq Rasool was a captain of the Punjab University Hockey Team and a member of Under-21 Pakistan Hockey Team touring Europe. He played for Pakistan against Japan and Malaysia.

Swimming
Dr. Bashir A. Malik won University Blue in swimming in 1952. Professor Naseer Mahmood Akhtar was Sports Secretary and was awarded University Blue in swimming. Dr. Muhammad Akmal was also University Colour holder in swimming and won a Bronze Medal in National. Dr. Rizwan Naseer along with Ahsan Riaz represented the Punjab University and won first position in their respective events in all Pakistan Inter University swimming competition. Kamran Khalid Cheema got University Blue in swimming.
Gymnastics
Dr. Muhammad Asif Chaudhry was declared as the best Gymnast of Pakistan in 1958.
Squash
Dr. Zafar Iqbal Sheikh was awarded Punjab University Blue in 1974-75 and he went on to win the Inter-University Squash championship the same year. Dr. Nadeem Mirza also captained the Punjab University Squash Team. In Squash 2000 our College Squash team lead by Qaisar Bashir got Bronze Medal in Punjab University.
Table Tennis
Dr. M. M. Khan was Pakistan’ No.1 in Table Tennis and represented the country in the Asian Games. K.E.M.C. girls made history in 1991 by winning all Punjab Intercollegiate table tennis tournaments for the first time. The team comprising of Dr. Asma Tareen and Dr. Ayesha Jameel was declared the champion. Naveed Hasan being Member of P.U. team got Gold Medal in Interuniversity tournament.
Foot Ball
Maj. Gen. Arshad Mirza led the University football team and was a member of the North West India and Punjab football sides. Mahmood Ahmad Zahid, also a University Blue, captained the Punjab University football team.
Volley Ball
In 2002 Volleyball team got 2nd position. Allah Nawaz was Captain of the team.

Badminton
K.E.M.C. will never forget the pair of Tariq and Khalid Enwar. Dr. Tariq was Interuniversity Badminton Champion and Captain of the Punjab University team. Khalid, his brother shared the championship in doubles and was also selected for National Camp. Jamal Mahmood was runner up in junior doubles National Championship in 1982.
Body Building
Maj. General Akhtar Ali Qureshi earned a unique distinction for the college by winning Pakistan Colour in Body Building and rowing. He secured second position in Mr. Pakistan contest in 1952.
Hiking & Mountaineering
The name of Prof. Tahir Saed Haroon and DR. Abdul Razzaq Qazi will always be remembered in the field of hiking and youth hosteling. Prof. Tahir Saeed Haroon was twice awarded Pakistan Colour for exploring new areas on foot and on cycle in the Northern Himalayas and Karakorum mountaineering by winning the top position in the Pakistan Universities Competition. Dr. Azim Ud Din re-presented Pakistan team in 1st Himalayan Marathon International expedition.
Boxing
Dr. Shoaib Ijaz Dar won Bronze Medal in the National Boxing Championship and was awarded the Punjab University Blue.
Cycling
Dr. Iqbal Ahmad, Dr. Ali Abbas Rizvi .. Amer Rauf, Dr. Amir Ali Shah and Dr. Pervaiz Malik hit the headlines in the national news by completing a bicycle expedition from Islamabad to Khunjrab pass (Altitude 16, 188ft) through Babusar Pass in record nine days. Prior Dr. Pervaiz Malik had travelled from London to Pakistan on bicycle in 1983.
Trekking
In session 2006-07 our University trekking team participated in all Pakistan Intervarsity trekking competition held at Islamabad. We got 3rd position. Team member, adil Ilyas, Auranzeb, Hasham Zafar and Ghulam Mustafa Sahir.
Lawn Tennis
Dr. Arif Elahi was a member of the Pakistan Tennis Team and represented the country in Davis Cup. Dr. Khalid Butt reached the quarter finals of Asian Tennis Championship. Team comprising of Ihtesham Akhtar, Salman Zubair, Amir Nasir, Fawad Ahmed

Chaudhry and Zeeshan Raman won Punjab University Intercollegiate twice 1995-96. Ihtesham Akhtar has got the Gold Medal in Punjab University Intercollegiate twice.
There are countless other names who won laurels for their college but could not be mentioned because of paucity of space or for lack of available data. Needless to say King Edward boys and girls will continue to uphold their College Flag in the field of Sports for years to come.
Facilities for sports
Following facilities for sports are present in our University. We have two play grounds a. University Cricket Ground,
b. Ground Between New Hostel and College Swimming Pool.
2. Tennis Courts, Basket ball court, Gymnasium, Table Tennis Hall, Badminton Hall, Swimming pool, Squash court, Rifle shooting Range, Auditorium, and Volley Ball courts, for the use of Players we have changing rooms, meeting rooms, and Jillani Pavillion,
Jillani Pavillion
This pavillion was inaugurated by Ex. Governor of Punjab Lt. General Ghulam Jilani Khan H-I(M) in 1986. It has seating arrangement for 1000 students. Its floor is 157 feet long and 127 feet wide. There are two tennis courts, one basketball court, two changing rooms, gymnasium, meeting room, Office of Director Physical Education (D.P.E.) and Sports Secretary. It is flood light and encircled by fence. There are many tennis courts in the country but as for seating capacity of the spectators is concerned, it is the biggest.
ALL SPORTS FACILITIES ARE PRESENT IN UNIVERSITY & HOSTEL PREMISES.
Annual sports activities
Students participates in interclass matches of all sports in Punjab University inter collegiate, and in inter Varsity matches. Friendly matches are also played with the teams of other medical colleges. A staff verses student’s cricket matches played one day before the Annual sports function. Sports function is the most colourful function of the University. Students take parts in athletics events and gymkhana events. Prizes are distributed at the end of the function.
Following (19) Sports Clubs exist in King Edward Medical University.
