About Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore

Fatima Jinnah Medical College, LahoreIn 1946 the family of Sir Ganga Ram started a medical college by the name Balak Ram medical College named after a son of Sir Ganga Ram. Soon after claiming independence in 1947 which engulfed this part of the sub-continent as well, the college which was in its infancy stood virtually closed ad its premises were abandoned. However, the renowned medical professional Prof. Shujaat Ali with the help and assistance of his other professional colleagues nurtured the idea of setting up a medical institution for producing female doctors and train them for helping in the health care of the women folk of this newly established country. It was especially felt that, by virtue of cultural and social set up of a Muslim society it was a much needed requirement of the time.

With this laudable objective in view the team of Prof. Shujaat Ali moved for obtaining the approval of Quaid-i-Azam for giving the institution name after the name of his sister Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah. The Quaid bery graciously approved the name of this institution to be associated with his sister Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah and FATIMA JINNAH MEDICAL COLLEGE FOR WOMEN LAHORE admitted its first batch of 39 students in Oct. 1948 and was then formally inaugurated on 31.03.1949 by Khawaja Nazim-ud-Din, the then Prime Minister of Pakistan. It was indeed a great occasion for the nation as the first women medical institution came into being in the country.

Hostels, Fatima Jinnah Medical College, LahoreAudio Visual Department has been provided with new computers and 8 multi-medias. There are plans for purchase of other audiovisual equipment, to improve the teaching facilities. The college arranged many seminars, conferences and workshops on various important topics and national issues last year.

Our students are talented and take part in all sorts of extra curricular activities including sports, debates, poetry, mushairas and declamation contests. The Literary Society “SHANAWAR” publishes college magazine ‘Vanguard’ regularly. Academically the college has done well and secured good positions in various university examinations and credit goes both to teachers and students. The college faculty is both male and female, all of them being highly qualified and dedicated teachers.

The hostel for students is within walking distance from the college. It consists of seven blocks. At the moment there are around one thousand students living in the hostel. Facilities for out door games and swimming pool are also available. The atmosphere is homely and congenial. The college operates 7 buses for the day scholars. There is facility of internet with 20 computers in the hostel. Water purification plant is functional around the clock and provide better than market mineral water.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital was attached with the college and thus it became the first teaching hospital in the country to train female doctors. Since then it functioned as an independent institution under the Board of Trustees till 1980, when like other medical teaching institutions of the province, it was brought under the control of Government of the Punjab, till to date it is functioning under the govt. control.

The College together with the hospital, as we see them today as a prestigious institution in the field of medical care, is the result of consistent strenuous efforts made by all those associated with them during the past decades, as year after year new blocks and related infrastructure were added. Presently there is a huge complex spread on an area of about 314 kanals. The lay out has been envisaged for bringing in harmony in the present structure and for ensuring that the future growth is purposeful and well planned and a source of uplifting the image and standard of services of the institution.

Although the number of students in F.J. Medical College has increased but the teaching beds remain the same at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. To overcome this problem, we acquired 23 kanals of land close to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where we have started construction of 400 bedded hospital on self help basis for teaching specialties and support facilities to be extended proportionately. Name of this new hospital is Fatima Jinnah Block and we hope to get a matching financial grant from Provincial & Federal Governments so that we are able to complete this project of public welfare. This will not only relieve the patient’s congestion but also new departments will be established along with subspecialties which will go a long way in the training of under and post-graduates.

Departments of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital have been renovated, especially operation theatres. Electro-medical equipment worth Rs.150 million have been purchased last year for operation theatres, ICU, CCU and new operation tables, lights, close circuit T.V. for teaching, ventilators, cardiac defibrillators, monitors have been provided. Radiology Department has been equipped with state of the art C.T. Scan, Mammography, 3D Color Doppler and new X-Ray machines.

Similarly state of the art equipment has been purchased for the Eye Department and it is the best equipped department in public sector in the country. A lot of new equipment for medical & obst./gynae. Departments have been ordered and will be commissioned very soon and we hope this will go a long way in providing best medical facilities to the people of Lahore and Punjab.

Madr-e-Millat, Mohtrama Fatima JinnahFJMC enjoys an illustrious position owing to its attachment to “Madr-i-Millat” Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah and “Quaid-i-Azam” Mohammad Ali Jinnah and in view of its special and unique disposition of being exclusively for women, all parameters of an excellent MEDICAL UNIVERSITY for women are therefore available to attract the attention of the government to confer upon it the status of a university especially in view of the avowed policy of the President of Pakistan to give special and preferential treatment to all matters related to the women. A strong resolution in this respect has been passed by the Academic Council of FJMC and is strongly supported by the Board of Management, FJMC/SGRH.
